How Life Choices Works

We believe in you, and we're here to prove it.

Life Choices is an innovative project specifically for autistic people living in Kent. We understand that everyone's journey is different, which is why we work in a completely person-centred way. There are no rigid timescales or stressful deadlines – just supportive guidance at your own pace.

Our approach helps you to:

  • Access mainstream society on your terms
  • Build confidence through small, achievable steps
  • Develop practical life skills that matter to you
  • Plan and work towards your personal goals
  • Explore your interests, whether that's arts, crafts, outdoor activities, sports, or anything else that sparks your curiosity

Your Life Choices Journey: Simple Steps

Step 1: Getting to Know Each Other

Once you contact us (by phone or email – whatever feels comfortable), we'll carefully match you with a specialist Life Choices Coach who we think will be a great fit for you.

We'll arrange a relaxed introduction meeting where you can:

  • Learn more about how Life Choices works
  • Share what you'd like to achieve (no pressure – just a friendly chat)
  • Discuss costs and practical details
  • Most importantly, see if you and your coach feel comfortable working together

Your parents, carers, or case manager are welcome to join this meeting if that would help you feel more at ease.

If everyone feels good about working together, we'll agree on your coaching hours and start date.

Arrange Your Introduction Meeting

Step 2: Working Together

You will meet with your coach weekly for your agreed hours. Your coach will come to your home and work with you to:

  • Identify goals that genuinely excite and motivate you
  • Discover activities and interests you'd like to explore
  • Set your own deadlines and timescales (remember, this is your pace)
  • Plan practical steps towards your goals

Your coach will:

  • Help you identify, plan, and achieve activities you're interested in
  • Act as your personal mentor and biggest supporter
  • Encourage you as you try new things
  • Advocate for you whenever needed

This is about your life and your choices. We combine your unique perspective with our experience to help you get where you want to be.

Step 3: Staying on Track Together

We regularly check in to make sure you're happy and getting the most from your sessions. You're always in control of how we spend our time together – after all, it's your life and your choices.

If something isn't working or you want to try a different approach, just let us know. We're flexible and committed to finding what works best for you.

After a few weeks of working together, we'll ask you to sign a simple Contract of Agreement that sets out how we'll work together.

"It was quite, quite extraordinary how relaxed and chatty my son was from the minute the Coach entered our home on day one. Starting the project has given us a step forward in our ‘what if’ plan for my son’s future. It is a sense of relief to know that he is having the opportunity to spend time with an adult who isn’t part of the family, is outside education and on a programme that is in the real world.” - Parent

Practical Information

How Much Does Life Choices Cost?

Most Life Choices sessions are fully or partially funded by Kent County Council, making this support accessible when you need it most.

  • Life Choices coaching costs £23.11 per hour
  • You'll receive a monthly invoice, payable after your sessions

How Long Does Coaching Last?

Life Choices is 'open-ended' – there's no fixed end date because we understand that meaningful change takes time. We'll continue working with you for as long as you're benefiting from the sessions, unless we feel you might be better supported in a different way.

What Activities Are Included?

Life Choices is completely personalised to you. Past participants have worked on:

Life Skills: Independent living, travel training, cooking, shopping, money management

Work & Education: CV writing, job searching, employment support, volunteering, community involvement

Personal Interests: Sports, arts and crafts, outdoor pursuits

Social Connection: Building relationships, community participation

Please note: Life Choices is coaching and mentoring, not counselling or personal care. If you need those types of support, we'll help connect you with the right services.

Meet Your Future Coaches

Our coaches bring years of life experience and specialised training in working with autistic people. But most importantly, we work hard to get to know you – treating you with respect as the unique individual you are, with your own personality, thoughts, and dreams.

We believe that with the right support, you can achieve remarkable things.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

"I enjoy the rapport I have with my Coach. We have a good understanding and I feel relaxed – we even share a similar sense of humour, which helps! I love that we always cover something specific in our sessions and don't waste time. I always leave with something practical I can use. I'd highly recommend this project." – Tom
