About Supported Internships

The programme is a full-time course supporting students to achieve high quality, paid and sustained employment at the end of the internship. Supported Internships are for young people with learning difficulties and/or autism in Swale, Medway, Thanet and Canterbury who have an Education, Health and Care Plan and are aged 17-24.

"My favourite part [of my work] has been taking orders, serving food and making the teas. I feel more confident about working here and am really excited about coming to work" - Steph

This programme suits students who want to work and who learn best by ‘doing’. It comprises three elements of support:

1. A work placement A coach will work with the student to find a good fit with one of our partner organisations. The intern will ‘learn on the job’ with the ongoing support of their coach and the employer.

2. Functional Skills Students attend one day a week studying the application of Maths and English in the real world, focusing on any learning gaps from the workplace.

3. Coaching Job Clubs and Personal Development groups as well as individual sessions with a work coach.

bemix is a Specialist Post-16 Institution. We are a direct contractor to the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) for our Supported Internships programme.
For students to access our Supported Internships, the local authorities’ Special Educational Needs (SEN) teams must approve us as named providers on students’ Education, Health and Care Plans.
Applications are via weblink form, followed up with meetings with students at their educational institution and at home. Alternatively, SEN teams can send us direct referrals for consultation.
