EbyE, Oliver McGowan Project and Self Advocacy

What do you love about working with bemix?

I love being able to make a difference to others who have Autism like myself. I love they got funding to get a therapist for a year due to my mental ill health during the pandemic.

How long have you been involved with bemix?

Since 2018.

What is your role in bemix?

My title is "Expert by Experience" so that means I use my experience of living with Aspergers Syndrome to help others. I go to Autism steering groups once a month to discuss ways health care professionals can support those with Autism better. I also do work for "Oliver McGowan" which is also changing the way health care professionals treat people with Autism in various settings and have more understanding of individuals needs. I have also recently helped co facilitate peer support groups on an ad hoc basis. This is helping members of the bemix community with ideas to help their mental health and have a space to chat with others about their worries.

What did you do before you joined bemix?

Various volunteering roles. 10 years teaching people computers at the library, 8 years at the Canterbury RSPCA centre caring for the cats and helping to teach art to people in care homes and residential settings.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

I love being creative and trying different crafts. I like photography, singing, attending my church, being out in nature and being around animals. I enjoy supporting the Postpals charity and sending sick kids and families cards and gifts. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends.
