In bemix, our Preparation for Employment and Supported Internship programmes support young people with learning difficulties and/or autism to prepare for the world of work. Our programmes help people build skills, confidence, and independence, which they carry forward on their journey from education to employment.

Recently, Supported Employment Specialists organised an outing for students in the Canterbury Preparation for Employment class to Meadow Grange Nursery in Blean. This visit offered students a chance to apply the skills they have been learning in the classroom whilst enjoying a fun day out. The group travelled together by bus, exploring the nursery to find gardening supplies for an exciting upcoming project: growing hyacinth bulbs to create Christmas gifts. These gifts will be sold at the Canterbury Innovation Centre, where bemix offices are based, and give the students hands-on experience in business and teamwork.

During their visit, the group picked up bulbs and soil and took the time to explore the many plants - both indoor and outdoor. They visited the nursery’s large gift area and delicatessen, and were surprised to spot an olive tree priced at £1,099!

The trip was a hit, and everyone enjoyed the change of scenery and the social experience of going somewhere new.

Here’s what some of the students had to say:

“It was good to get out of the classroom.” - Jack

“I liked the social aspect of going out to the garden centre.” - Ben

“I was very surprised to see the price of some of the trees; some were over £1,000!” - Matt

We look forward to seeing these hyacinth bulbs bloom in time for the festive season, and sharing the hard work of students in our Preparation for Employment programme!
