Supported Employment groups visit local landmarks Young people explore local history through shared experiences, confidence building and community connection Young people from bemix Supported Internship and Preparation for Employment groups recently enjoyed visits to two of Kent’s well-known historic landmarks, giving them the opportunity to learn, connect and spend time together outside of the classroom environment. One group visited Rochester Castle, climbing to the top of the historic castle and taking in the stunning views across the local area. Although the weather was windy, everyone embraced the experience and enjoyed exploring the castle while learning more about its fascinating Norman history. Another group travelled to Fort Amherst, where they explored the famous tunnels and discovered more about the site’s role during the Napoleonic period and World War II. The underground tour gave young people the chance to experience local history in an interactive and memorable way. The visits were about far more than history alone. Experiences like these help young people build confidence, strengthen friendships, develop communication skills and create positive shared memories together. Spending time outside of the classroom environment can also support wellbeing, encourage curiosity and help young people feel more connected to their local community. It was wonderful to see everyone engaging so positively throughout the trips, supporting one another and taking part in conversations about what they had learned and experienced. Stephen commented: “It was really good.” Harvey said: “It was interesting to know that the castle was built by the Normans.” Billie said: “It was nice to get out of the classroom for a little while.” At bemix, we believe opportunities like these are an important part of helping people with learning disabilities and autistic people to build confidence, develop independence and feel part of the communities around them whilst creating spaces where people can truly be seen, be heard and belong.
