Opening a new business in the midst of the pandemic, The Phoenix Tavern in Faversham sought staff - not only to join their team - but also to assist them in preparing for launch. One month prior to the reopening of the country, following a recent national lockdown, the Phoenix team were getting ready to welcome customers through the doors for the first time. During this period, Steven began his bemix Supported Internship placement, at the beginning of March 2021.

As part of the programme, bemix looked carefully at matching roles, responsibilities and tasks, to Steven’s skills and interests - paying attention to his goals and aspirations. Supported by his Work Coach, Lysette, Steven’s initial jobs were to assist in helping get things ready for the opening on 12 April 2021. Jobs included clearing, cleaning and washing up, supporting the Head Chef in preparing the kitchen, and the Front of House team in preparing the restaurant.

Steven worked throughout the launch of the business and first few months of trading, navigating challenges, national restrictions (still in place, out of lockdown) and the natural evolution of a fledgling business, with enthusiasm and calm.

Steven’s employers have praised him highly for his organization skills, smart appearance, and his cheerful, can-do attitude. His colleagues have repeatedly remarked on his friendly disposition and enthusiastic approach to his work.

Everyone’s been so helpful and l really feel part of a team, thanks for all the support from everyone, and l know l have lots of new friends now.” - Steven

As part of his placement, Steven worked on a part-time basis for 4 months, until his employers offered him a permanent and paid part-time position. Steven accepted the position and worked with gradually reduced support from his Work Coach, until his employment start date in July 2021.
