The “A Sense of Belonging” animation project was a collaboration between the “Be Animated” and “Music and Arts” groups in bemix. The animation explores mental health, guiding viewers inside the mind of someone experiencing isolation.

In Be Animated, people choose what they want to explore within digital media. They learn how to create animations, design digital art, and edit photographs, while also developing skills in creative writing and storytelling.

In Music and Arts, people explore film making, recording and performing music, song writing, animation, podcasting, production, photo editing, and more.

This collaboration was part of a showcase of art in the bemix “A Sense of Belonging” exhibition at The Beaney in Canterbury, running until January 2025. Exhibition visitors experienced how animation and music can be tools for sharing stories and emotions, and reflecting on the theme of belonging.

The “A Sense of Belonging” animation captures a ‘haunting sense of inner emptiness’. It is set against a dynamic drum and bass soundtrack created by Music and Arts project member, Thomas Dice. The fast-paced music mirrors the busy, unsettled feelings of the mind. The project was a way to express what isolation can feel like, highlighting the importance of connection and belonging.
