bemix, The Audiobox - Giving People a Voice Through Co-production At bemix, we believe the best ideas come from working together. That's why co-production sits at the heart of everything we do, and nowhere is that more evident than in The Audiobox. Every week, members come together to create a radio programme that is entirely shaped by their ideas, experiences and creativity. They decide what matters, choose the stories they want to tell, research topics, write interview questions, welcome guests, present the show, and help produce each broadcast from beginning to end. This isn't a project where people are invited to take part. It's a project that is created with people, by people. That's what makes Audiobox so special. For more than a decade, members have been co-producing radio that informs, entertains and challenges perceptions. Every programme reflects the interests and passions of the people behind the microphones, creating conversations that are authentic, engaging and meaningful. Working together, the team develops every aspect of the show. They learn broadcasting techniques, interviewing skills, research methods, audio production and teamwork, all while supporting one another to grow in confidence and discover new talents. Leila says, “I could never have had the confidence to record my voice before. When I try to record my voice, I start to stammer. Working together in the post recording, I can edit and create shows that don’t include bits I want and edit out the bits that I don't like” Sammy says “It gives us a chance to express our views and feel involved in the community” C., says, “ It gives us a chance to talk about what matters to us. I’ve built up my confidence to interview people, too” Ty said, “ Sometimes music can say so much more than words alone - I love expressing my thoughts through my music choices (they ROCK!!!)” The result is much more than a weekly radio programme. It's a place where people find their voice! Over the years, Audiobox has welcomed an extraordinary range of guests. Politicians, authors, musicians, campaigners and community leaders have all joined the conversation, recognising the professionalism and curiosity of the presenters. Most recently, Tom and Ty interviewed Skindred frontman Benji Webbe, discussing music, creativity and the importance of positive change. An interview that demonstrated just how far members have come through their commitment and passion. But perhaps the greatest achievement isn't the guest list. It's the confidence, friendships and opportunities that have grown through genuine co-production. Members don't simply learn new skills; they influence the direction of every programme. They make decisions together, solve problems together and celebrate successes together. Every broadcast is a reflection of what can be achieved when everyone's voice is valued equally. The programmes continue to reach audiences through Dover Community Radio (every Wednesday 2 - 3 pm) and the growing Mixcloud archive, giving listeners a unique perspective on local communities, current issues, and the experiences of people with learning disabilities and autistic people. Audiobox shows that co-production isn't just a way of working. It's a way of creating opportunities It's a way of building confidence It's a way of changing perceptions Most importantly, it's a way of ensuring everyone's voice is heard. As we celebrate The Audiobox, we celebrate every member who has stepped behind the microphone, every guest who has shared their story and every person who has helped shape a programme that truly belongs to the people who create it.
