Jobs and News News Be Seen, Be Heard and Belong: Harry's Journey to Employment Success For many young people, finding the confidence to take their first steps into employment can feel like a huge challenge. At bemix, we know that when people are seen for their strengths, listened to and given genuine opportunities, incredible things can happen. Harry's story is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when a young person, an employer and a support team work together through co-production to create the right opportunity. Harry Williams joined our Supported Internship programme, lacking confidence and rarely venturing out independently. Like many young people, he had skills and potential but needed the opportunity and support to demonstrate them. Following a couple of successful taster days in November, Harry began a work placement with RDUK in Strood in January 2026. RDUK specialises in remanufacturing laptops and desktop computers, and quickly recognised something important about Harry - his abilities. RDUK are an organisation that values and nurtures talent, providing a busy and supportive workplace where Harry could learn, contribute and grow. From the very beginning, Harry impressed everyone around him. Within just a few weeks, his Team Leader, James Sherman, and his colleagues were providing excellent feedback on his work, attitude, and commitment. Harry quickly became a valued member of the team and thrived in the workplace, requiring very little support from his Supported Employment Specialist. The success of the placement is a testament to true co-production in action. Harry, bemix and the team at RDUK worked together to create an environment where Harry could succeed. By listening to Harry's aspirations and recognising his strengths, everyone played a part in helping him build confidence and develop his independence. As Harry's confidence grew, so did his ambitions. Through travel training with bemix, he learned to travel independently to and from work. During one of his review meetings, Harry confidently asked whether he could increase his hours! From March, he began working longer days, demonstrating just how far he has come on his journey. Then came the news that exceeded everyone's expectations. So impressed by Harry's contribution, RDUK wanted to start paying him a salary. While this wasn't possible within the Supported Internship programme, RDUK owner Nick Waite was determined not to lose such a talented team member and immediately began exploring the next step. The result? Harry has been offered an apprenticeship. For a young person who arrived at bemix lacking confidence and independence, this is a remarkable achievement and an exciting new chapter. This success belongs not only to Harry but also to the incredible team at RDUK. Nick Waite, James Sherman, Caan (his teammate) and the wider team have created a welcoming, encouraging and supportive workplace where Harry has been able to flourish. Their belief in Harry and commitment to inclusive employment have made all the difference. Harry's journey shows exactly why Supported Internships work. When employers recognise talent, focus on strengths and work in partnership with young people and support providers, amazing things can happen. Most importantly, Harry's story reminds us what it means to be seen, be heard and valued for who you are. Harry's Words "Thank you to everyone. We are lucky to have found each other." There were more than a few tears of joy in the room when Harry shared those words. What RDUK Said Nick and James from RDUK said: "We have never offered anyone a job or apprenticeship in such a short space of time. Harry has done really well." We couldn't agree more. Congratulations, Harry. Everyone at bemix is incredibly proud of you, and we can't wait to see what you achieve next.
