Students from the bemix Supported Internship Programme recently enjoyed a special visit to Maya’s Community Shop in Herne Bay, where they went to support and catch up with their Preparing for Employment (PfE) friends, Tommy and Lewis, who are currently volunteering there.

The visit gave the Supported Interns the chance to see first-hand the important work Tommy and Lewis are doing in their volunteer roles, helping out around the shop and supporting local people in the community.

Maya’s Community Shop is a free resource, open to anyone who may be struggling and needs support, offering essential items to help people get by.

The students enjoyed looking around the shop, learning more about how it helps others, and seeing the positive impact their friends are making.

There were also some exciting discoveries along the way! Emmanuel was delighted to find a glass chess set in the shop and enjoyed playing a game with Ben later that lunchtime.

After the visit, the group spent some well-earned downtime exploring Herne Bay. Although it was a little windswept, spirits stayed high, with some lucky wins on the arcade 2p machines adding to the fun.

Tabby shared:

“It was nice to see Tommy and Lewis in their role, and helping people who need it.”

Emmanuel said:

“Maya’s was interesting and I was very pleased with the chess set!”

Visits like this are a wonderful way for students to learn from one another, celebrate each other’s progress, and see the many ways they can contribute to their communities through volunteering and work experience.

We’re so proud of Tommy and Lewis for the work they’re doing, and of all our students for supporting one another on their employment journeys.
