Self Advocacy Leadership Team & Peer Advocate

What do you love about working with bemix?

I enjoy learning new skills and helping more people and giving people with a learning disability the chance to be treated equally.

How long have you been involved with bemix?

For almost 4 years

What is your role in bemix?

I am now a member of the Lead Self-Advocacy Team since 2021. I will also be working as a ‘Peer Advocate’ for a new project ‘Peer Advocacy in Secure Care’. I was offered the job because I have got lived experience of being in secure care myself. For the last few years I have been living a full and happy life in my local community in Kent. I am going to help inspire other people in secure care to feel confident that you can live a successful and happy life after being discharged from hospital. I will use my experiences to help other people.

What did you do before you joined bemix?

I used to come to Skillnet to do woodwork. I also spent time customising motorbike helmets and masks to sell. I’ve got lived experience of being in the Criminal Justice System and secure care. I learnt how to control my emotions and that if you follow the rules you get to move out of prison or hospital quicker. It helps you to be someone to talk to so other people don’t make the wrong choices.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I dress-customise my motorbike and army helmets. I also play pool and got through to the final in my pool tournament.
