bemix is proud to be an organisational member of the National Counselling Society (NCS).  This means we are part of a wider community of counselling professionals and organisations.  We work within the NCS Code of Ethics.  This means we make sure all of the counsellors on placement with us are trained and supervised to a high standard. Everyone in the counselling team has ongoing supervision and training to ensure we are working safely and continuing to develop our skills to support people to the best of our ability.

Why we joined the National Counselling Society

Being an organisational member of the National Counselling Society demonstrates our commitment to an ethical way of working. It means people can easily access the Code of Ethics and see how we work safely.

For us, a partnership or membership means mutual support and learning. You can find out more about this in our bemix Ethical Policy on our vision and values page. Or visit our page on Co-production.

We want to be able to feed into and influence developments in the field of counselling for people with learning difficulties and/or autism. Through researching the need for our counselling work, we found that people with learning difficulties and/or autism face a number of barriers to accessing counselling including: affordability and poor relationships with Care Managers who have the power to agree and allocate benefits funding for people; lack of awareness about what counselling is and how to access it; limited choice in the free or affordable counselling available; the vital need for enough time to build rapport with a counsellor when there may be significant differences in frame of reference or communication styles, and that short term counselling tends not to fulfill that need; a lack of confidence and experience from counsellors in working with people with learning difficulties and/or autism.

We have plans to develop training and workshops to help influence and support the counselling profession to become more inclusive and accessible for people with learning difficulties and/or autism. Being a member of the National Counselling Society means we are a more integrated group within the profession.
