Who is the event for?

This workshop is aimed at both student and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists. It may also be helpful for counselling tutors, supervisors and counselling agency managers.

About the workshop

This workshop will be an opportunity for counsellors and psychotherapists to learn from the experiences of clients with a learning difficulty. The workshop draws on the ideas of co-production and pluralism; ways of working that value and use the individual human skills and experiences that both people in the relationship bring. Co-led by a former client with a learning difficulty who has a passion for making counselling more accessible. The workshop will explore common barriers that prevent people with learning difficulties from accessing counselling, and give the opportunity for us to think about how we might help overcome these barriers. We will think about how involving clients with learning difficulties in developing counselling services can make counselling more accessible for all clients. We will spend time working on simple explanations for the therapeutic models and concepts you use so that you can work pluralistically with clients with learning difficulties and involved them in a shared decision making process about their therapy.

How does this workshop link to our appeal?

We are really excited to be developing the workshop as a bespoke training opportunity to bring together counsellors and people with learning difficulties to learn from one another and make counselling more accessible. This is an affordable opportunity to get a taster of what the longer workshops will involve.
